This article was written by Radio Moto.net

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is holding its first edition of the National Climate Week since Monday, October 27, 2025. Environmental actors and researchers from across the country are taking part in the activities being held in Kinshasa. This week is an initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Development, and the New Climate Economy.

Opening the event, President Félix Tshisekedi stated that climate change is not an abstraction but a reality experienced daily by the Congolese population. He expressed hope that the discussions and themes to be developed during this forum will help forge a shared and participatory vision for the country in the quest for global climate balance. Félix Tshisekedi also encouraged investment in this vital sector.

The Minister of Environment, for her part, emphasized that the DRC is the lungs of the planet due to its immense environmental potential. She stressed the need to preserve the country’s biodiversity—a vital global heritage from which the planet derives its climatic balance.

This is what Denise Kyalwahi, an environmental journalist taking part in the forum, reported to RADIOMOTO.NET.

She also outlined the key challenges around which the discussions during this Climate Week will revolve.

“We aim to mobilize funds to support climate adaptation activities and actions led by the sons and daughters of this country—by youth and local organizations—who continue to design projects and propose solutions to climate-related problems. During this session, we want to create momentum, raise awareness among communities, and attract financial partners and donors to support these local initiatives for climate adaptation and sustainable development.

A nother major point discussed concerns the Green Corridor Kinshasa–North Kivu, which seeks to restore vegetation cover in areas degraded by human activity and marked by deforestation. The goal is simply to reforest—to plant trees and reclaim these zones,” she explained.

Launched on October 27, 2025, in Kinshasa, this National Climate Week concludes on Friday, October 31, 2025. The outcomes of these sessions will enable the DRC to develop a roadmap to be presented at COP30, which will be held in Brazil.
