Originally from Tanzania, Alice Kaijage William, a water resources specialist and her country’s youth representative within the Nile Basin, has been elected President of the Youth Platform bringing together the ten Nile Basin member countries.

Her election entrusts her with the responsibility of mobilising young people around the protection of water resources, promoting their active participation in conservation initiatives, and contributing to the search for solutions to the various challenges facing the Nile Basin.

Speaking to the editorial team of naturelcd.net following her election, Alice Kaijage William emphasised that her priority would be to bring together young people from the ten countries concerned in order to strengthen their direct involvement in all activities related to the protection and sustainable management of the Nile Basin’s resources.

She intends, in particular, to encourage the implementation of the various recommendations emerging from the discussions, while placing strong emphasis on cooperation among member countries. According to her, the challenges facing these countries share several similarities, creating an opportunity to pool experiences and expertise in order to develop common solutions.

Aware of the magnitude of this responsibility, the newly elected president acknowledges that coordinating young people from ten different countries represents a significant challenge. Nevertheless, she remains convinced that unity, collaboration, communication and transparency will facilitate the fulfilment of this mission and strengthen the resilience of the Nile Basin.

Furthermore, Alice Kaijage William stressed the need to broaden youth participation in the protection of water resources and other natural assets available within the basin. She also highlighted their role in promoting peace and good governance.

She particularly commended the diversity of backgrounds, skills and experiences among the young people who took part in the two-day proceedings. In her view, bringing together these different areas of expertise is a major asset for strengthening cooperation among the ten countries and encouraging concrete actions towards the conservation of the Nile Basin.

Addressing young people who were unable to attend the meeting, the newly elected president called for greater mobilisation and commitment. She assured them that the participants also intend to represent those who remained in their respective communities, while encouraging them to join the youth network and benefit from further training opportunities in water resource conservation.

She believes that this approach will help broaden public awareness, strengthen young people’s knowledge and facilitate their participation in initiatives aimed at ensuring the long-term protection of the Nile Basin.

For Alice Kaijage William, the success of this mission will depend primarily on collective mobilisation, the sharing of experiences and the commitment of young people from the ten member countries to the sustainable management of the Nile Basin’s resources.
